Cha is a huge style. Born out of and influenced by many different styles: pachanga, son, bolero, mambo, salsa... There is cuban cha, ballroom cha, soncha, even salsa styled cha! Dancers can not only choose from a range of styles but also a number of different rhythms when dancing cha cha cha...The music of cha is quite diverse: ranging from slow and romantic to fast and energetic, from contemporary to more classical arrangements. Unlike salsa where the tempo is usually fixed, cha often changes tempo or speed...For the dancer, cha is not only a fun dance, but is also a complex and sophisticated style, allowing for great musicality and diverse expression on the dance floor.On a more personal note: I have been in love with cha for many years and have been wanting to create a cha night where people can learn, be challenged, and inspired by this wonderful dance. WHAT IS ON2 SALSA?
“offbeat” vs “onbeat”
On2 salsa is danced “offbeat” vs On1 salsa which is danced “onbeat”. Another way of putting it, is that On2 dancers dance “inside” the music whilst On1 dancers dance “on top” of the music. Both have their place on the dance floor. On2 salsa emphasizes harmony with the percussive instruments in salsa music, such as the congas, timbales, and clave, since many or all of those instruments often mark the second and sixth beat in the music. There are few forms of On2 salsa, with New York style perhaps the most well known. New York style (sometimes known as mambo) is danced in a line. However, unlike LA style, it is danced on the second beat of the music ("on 2"), and the follower steps forward on the first measure of the music, not the leader. There is simple On2 salsa, which allows On1 salsa dancers to access the “offbeat” feel very quickly. There is even Onclave salsa – but you will have to come to class to find out about that one!

Explore the energising, rhythmic patterns of West African drumming with master drummer, Appiah. Drumming provides an excellent forum for building a sense of community and team spirit, and development of positive mental health and wellbeing. Classes are run at a general level and cater for people who have never drummed to those with a bit more experience. Appiah’s teaching style allows for gradual development and improvement in technique and style as well as expressive input and creativity. Sessions will involve learning how to use djembe drums, dun duns, bells and shakers. Drums can be hired for $5 an additional per class.
